Primary Assumptions

Before we describe the use-cases of interworking, it is important to describe the interworking model that we assume.

Ownership

1. The 3G operator will be master network for policy, authentication and authorization related to network usage and user permissions. The WiMAX network will conform to the existing (and evolving) 3GPP Access network architecture as specified in [TS 22.934]

Billing

1. The 3G operator will be the master network for billing and charging related operations in the interworked scenario.

Session Related

1. The WiMAX MS will implement an IMS-compliant SIP User Agent solution which is capable of establishing signaling via SIP and media via RTP
2. For simplicity, it is assumed that the WiMAX MS will have atleast one codec that is supported by an IMS UE. In real life, this may not be the case, in which case an edge entity will need to perform transcoding (an example is the MGW).

Identity

1. It is assumed that the WiMAX MS has an IMS compatible SIM (I-SIM or similar) that is capable of storing the public and private identities as required by 3G architecture. U-SIMs and mapping of identities in a non I-SIM situation is also possible, but does not affect the interworking architecture, and hence will not be considered.
