Introduction

The CPE WAN Management Protocol proposed by DSL forum defines a mechanism that encompasses secure auto-configuration of a CPE, and also incorporates other CPE management functions into a common framework.

The major network elements that are involved in the CWMP operation as shown in Figure 1 include

CPE

Customer Premises equipment or a CPE is a device which resides in the home or office and enables a user to use the barodband services offered by a broadband service provides. The CPE devices can be as elementary as ADSL Modems to as sophisticated as Residentail and Home gateways. Typically these CPEs have a WAN side interface which has a termination from the braodband service provider. this termination can either be ethernet/DSL or PON based. The interface which is exposed towards the subscriber or user is termed as a LAN interface which can be based on various layer 2 technologies like ethernet, WLAN or WiMAX. This LAN interface can easily be configured and used for setting up an internal network which is pervate to the user

TR-069 ACS

A TR-069 Auto Configuration Server or generally termed as an ACS in the broadband terminology is a designated network node in the broadband service provider(BSP) network which is responsible for managing the devices at the Customer Premises. The ACS generally is a pure software only solution which resides on a machine in the BSP domain. The ACS solutions are generally implemnted in such a way that they are capable of interoperating with any TR-069 compliant CPE device. The major advantage of using ACS for provisioning a CPE device rather than SNMP is that it is more secure and is agnostics to the kind of CPE device you are using. Generally, in an SNMP managed device there are lot of proprietory MIBs that have to be supported. In case of CWMP each time you have to do some device or technology specific changes the data model has to be adpated to enhanced to achieve the functionality.

The CPE WAN Management Protocol is intended to support a variety of functionalities to manage a collection of CPE. Current implementation of this protocol exhibhits the following primary capabilities:

 #  Auto-configuration and dynamic service provisioning
 #  Software/firmware image management
 #  Status and Performance Monitoring
 # Diagnostics

Auto-Configuration and Dynamic Service Provisioning

The CPE WAN Management Protocol allows an ACS to provision a CPE or collection of CPE based on a variety of criteria. The provisioning mechanism allows CPE provisioning at the time of initial connection to the broadband access network, and the ability to re-provision or re-configure at any subsequent time. This includes support for asynchronous ACS-initiated re-provisioning of a CPE. The identification mechanisms included in the protocol allow CPE provisioning based either on the requirements of each specific CPE, or on collective criteria such as the CPE vendor, model, software version, or other criteria. The network diagram is given in Figure 1

Software/Firmware Image Management

The CPE WAN Management Protocol provides tools to manage downloading of CPE software/firmware image files. The protocol provides mechanisms for version identification, file download initiation (ACS initiated downloads and optional CPE initiated downloads), and notification of the ACS of the success or failure of a file download. The CPE WAN Management Protocol also defines a digitally signed file format that may optionally be used to download either individual files or a package of files along with explicit installation instructions for the CPE to perform. This signed package format ensures the integrity of downloaded files and the associated installation instructions, allowing authentication of a file source that may be a party other than

the ACS operator.

Status and Performance Monitoring

The CPE WAN Management Protocol provides support for a CPE to make available information that the ACS may use to monitor the CPEs status and performance statistics. The protocol defines a common set of such parameters, and provides a standard syntax for vendors to define additional non-standard parameters that an ACS can monitor. It also defines a set of conditions under which a CPE should actively notify the ACS of changes.

Diagnostics

The CPE WAN Management Protocol provides support for a CPE to make available information that the ACS may use to diagnose connectivity or service issues. The protocol defines a common set of such parameters and a general mechanism for adding vendor-specific diagnostic capabilities.

TR069 network architecture

The ACS is a server that resides in the network and manages devices in or at the subscriber premises. The CPE WAN Management Protocol may be used to manage both DSL B-NTs and other types of CPE, including stand-alone routers and LAN-side client devices. It is agnostic to to the specific access medium utilized by the service provider, although it does depend on IP-layer connectivity having been established by the device.

TR069 Positioning

The CPE WAN Management Protocol is used on the ACS-Southbound Interface between an Auto-Configuration Server (ACS), and a B-NT as shown in Figure 1. While the CPE WAN Management Protocol is targeted at management of B-NTs, this protocol may be used to manage other types of CPE as well, including stand-alone routers and LAN-side client devices, as also shown in Figure 1. Unless otherwise indicated, the CPE WAN Management Protocol as defined in this specification applies to any such managed device. Portions of this specification that apply only to a B-NT are explicitly indicated in the text. This specification includes a complete definition of the CPE parameter model for a B-NT. The corresponding parameter model for other specific device types is beyond the scope of this specification.

The CPE WAN Management Protocol comprises several components that are unique to this protocol, and makes use of several standard protocols. The protocol stack defined by the CPE WAN Management Protocol is shown in Figure 2. The CPE and ACS must adhere to the requirements of the underlying standard protocols for interoperability reasons. Protocol Stack for TR069 is as follows:
