OPNET stands for OPtimized Network Enginerring Tool is a proprietary product of OPNET Technologies, Inc. Opnet provides a comprehensive environment for thr specification, simulation, modeling and performance analysis of communication network. OPNET provides the environment for simulating a simple LAN as well as a global satellite network.. OPNET a Discrete event simulator? is used as the means of analyzing system performance and their behavior. The key OPNET features are as follows

 * Hierarchical Modeling
 * Specialized in communication networks(has rich library
 that can support most networks

OPNET allows developers to specify and modify the models in great detail, identify the elements of the model of interest, execute the simulation and analyze the results in the form of data and graphs Following is the hierarchical structure in the OPNET Model

 * Network Editor - network topology models
 * Node Editor - data flow models
 * Process Editor - control flow models

The strength of OPNET lies in the rich set of libraries it provides to model any kind of communication network. OPNET provides excellent interface for collecting and analyzing the results. The result can be displayed in numerous graphical and textual formats. OPNET features which provides interfaces for analyzing collected results are

  * Probe Editor - collected data
  * Analysis Tool     statistical results
  * Filter Tool       date processing
  * Animation Viewer  dynamic behavior

Opnet also allows to debug the running simulation by inserting the breakpoints wherever needed, thus providing the developer with rich and sophisticated developing environment.
