VoIP Information/observations in random order

Info

Most VoIP implementations are based on H323?, SIP? or
 proprietary sandards.

A note on VoIP complexity

Believe it or not, all soft phone or pc-to-dial application
that you might have used to call somebody sitting at other
PC or even at PSTN involves just a three way handshake, and
that too using an unreliable transport like UDP ! SIP
standard keeps the session establishment simple enough to
enable this, yet it provides features such as media/feature
negotiation and call feature changes for supporting
additional features besides a simple telephone/voice over
 IP.

Free VoIP resources

Loads of free soft phones are available on the market e.g
